Crows Remember Your Face and Will Hold a Grudge Forever

If you ever mess with a crow, congratulations ? you may have just made a lifelong enemy. Crows are one of the very few animals that can recognize individual human faces, and more impressively, they hold onto that information for years. Scientists proved this by having researchers wear specific masks while handling crows, then walking the same areas years later. The birds scolded, dive-bombed, and rallied their flockmates against those exact faces.

What makes this even more remarkable is that crows pass this grudge-knowledge down to their young. A crow chick that never personally met a mask-wearing researcher will still learn from its parents to treat that face as a threat. This is cultural learning ? a skill long thought to be uniquely human.

Crows also appear to hold something resembling group funerals. When a crow dies, nearby crows gather and raise a loud ruckus around the body. Scientists think this may be a community-wide debriefing on how their fellow crow met its end ? basically a neighborhood safety meeting, just with more screaming.

Next time you are outside and a crow stares at you a moment too long, smile and wave. It is remembering. It is absolutely taking notes.
