Scientists originally assumed this meant mantis shrimps could see millions more colors than us. Turns out, it's more complicated than that. They're actually worse at distinguishing between similar shades — but they process visual information at lightning speed, identifying colors almost instantly rather than comparing them the way we do. It's less "more colors" and more "a completely different operating system for the eyes."
What they do see is genuinely alien: ultraviolet light, polarized light, and colors that don't have names in any human language. Every time a mantis shrimp glances at a coral reef, it's getting a private light show that no human will ever experience.
The best part? They also punch with the acceleration of a bullet. So they're basically a tiny, rainbow-visioned boxer living their absolute best life down on the ocean floor. Respect.
