Wombats Are the World's Only Cube-Poop Producers

Meet the wombat: a chubby, burrowing marsupial from Australia with an extraordinary claim to fame. Of all the animals on this planet ? from jellyfish to elephants ? only the wombat produces perfectly cube-shaped droppings. Yes, cubes. Like tiny biological dice scattered across the Australian outback.

For years, scientists were baffled. How does a round digestive tract produce a square output? The answer lies in the wombat's unusually elastic intestines, which contain two stiff grooves that flatten and mold the poop as it travels through. It is basically nature's most niche pasta press.

Wombats use these little cubes as territorial markers, stacking them on rocks and logs to signal that a burrow is taken. The cube shape turns out to be genuinely useful ? round droppings would simply roll away, while cubes stay put. Evolution, it seems, has a very dry sense of humor.

Researchers from the Georgia Institute of Technology published a paper on this in 2018, and it earned an Ig Nobel Prize ? the annual award for science that makes you laugh first and think second. So the next time someone suggests your work is pointless, just remember: someone received a prestigious prize for studying wombat poop physics.
