Wombats Drop the World's Only Cubic Poop

Deep in the Australian bush, the humble wombat is quietly making history ? one square deposit at a time. Yes, wombats produce cube-shaped poop, and no, that is not a typo. They are the only known animals on Earth to produce geometrically ambitious, perfectly cube-shaped droppings.

For years, scientists scratched their heads over how a round digestive tract could possibly yield a cube. The mystery was cracked when researchers discovered that the last stretch of a wombat's intestine has varying elasticity ? some sections are stiffer than others ? which molds the waste into corners and edges as it moves along. Nature, apparently, had precision manufacturing figured out long before any of us did.

But why cubes? The leading theory is that wombats use their droppings as territorial markers, stacking them neatly on logs and rocks to send a message to rivals. A cube is far less likely to roll away than a sphere, making it a surprisingly practical calling card. Evolution has a very specific sense of humor.

Scientists at Georgia Tech even earned an Ig Nobel Prize for their research into wombat digestion ? awarded for work that first makes you laugh, then makes you think. So next time someone claims nature has no sense of style, you know exactly what to tell them.
