This Frog Freezes Solid Every Winter and Just Thaws Back to Life

Somewhere in the forests of North America, a small frog is doing something that sounds scientifically impossible: it freezes almost completely solid during winter. No heartbeat. No breathing. Ice forms between its cells and inside its body cavities. By any reasonable definition, it looks dead. And yet, every spring, the wood frog thaws out and hops away like it just woke up from a slightly chilly nap.

The secret is in the frog's remarkable biochemistry. When temperatures drop, the wood frog's body floods its cells with enormous amounts of glucose โ€” essentially pumping itself full of natural antifreeze syrup. This high-sugar solution prevents ice from forming inside the cells themselves, which would be fatal. Instead, ice forms safely in the spaces between cells and in body cavities, leaving the delicate cellular machinery intact through months of freezing.

Scientists are intensely interested in this process because it could have major implications for human medicine โ€” specifically organ preservation and long-term storage. Right now, donated organs can only survive for hours outside the body. A frog that survives months in a frozen state is, to a transplant surgeon, basically a superhero.

So next time someone complains about the cold, just remember: somewhere out there, a wood frog is completely frozen, totally unbothered, patiently waiting for spring. No complaints, no hot cocoa. Just vibes and glucose.
