Sharks Are Older Than Trees
Trees first appeared on Earth roughly 385 million years ago. Sharks showed up around 450 million years ago. That's a 65-million-year head start ? enough time to evolve, thrive, and essentially perfect the art of being a fish before a single tree so much as sprouted a leaf.
To put that in perspective: sharks predate the dinosaurs by about 250 million years. They survived every mass extinction event Earth has thrown at them, including the one that wiped out the dinosaurs. While entire species of enormous, terrifying creatures were being erased from history, sharks looked at the chaos and basically shrugged.
Modern sharks are remarkably similar to their ancient ancestors ? which either means evolution perfected them early, or sharks simply refused to change out of stubbornness. Scientists lean toward the former, noting that their cartilage-based skeletons and sensory systems are extraordinarily well-designed for ocean life.
The real twist? Because shark skeletons are made of cartilage rather than bone, they fossilize poorly. Most of what we know about ancient sharks comes from their teeth ? which, conveniently, they produce tens of thousands of over a lifetime. Nature's most efficient business card.
