Wombats Are the Only Animals That Poop in Cubes
In the vast and creative universe of animal behavior, most creatures keep their bathroom habits fairly conventional. Wombats did not get that memo. They are the only known animals on Earth that produce cube-shaped feces ? tidy little square parcels, stacked with the precision of a very confused architect.
Wombat intestines are round, just like everyone else's. The magic happens further up ? their digestive tracts are unusually long, and the intestinal walls contract unevenly, squeezing the waste into angular shapes over the course of several days.
Why cubes? Wombats use their droppings to mark territory, and cubes don't roll away. It's genuinely practical. While the rest of the animal kingdom is out here dropping things that tumble downhill, wombats are stacking neat little signposts that stay exactly where they're left.
